"As I paint at my easel each day in the studio, I approach creating art with the idea of continually developing my artistic understanding and enhancing my personal expression," writes Sean Farrell of his philosophy of life as an artist.
Farrell, who grew up in a small town where there were few opportunities for formal art education, began drawing on his own at a young age and through intense study of the great artists he found in library books began to nurture his innate talent. He writes of his younger years, "Looking at great paintings always excited me and by visiting museums [and] studying numerous art books I gradually began to increase my artistic understanding," which led Farrell to teach himself to paint with oils in the late 1980’s and then eventually to attend a painting workshop in New Mexico in the early 1990’s where he met numerous professional artists, who inspired him to a full-time artistic career.
Farrell's paintings are evocative of the Dutch and Italian Old Masters such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt. Much of his work has been directly affected by his numerous trips to Europe to study the painters he loves so much. He says, "By visiting the wonderful museums and old churches and viewing the artworks in person one can gain considerably more insight than from looking at reproductions. Studying, sketching and painting from direct observation of the worlds greatest art has had a profound influence on my efforts to create beauty in my own paintings. Some of the qualities I admire in a painting include the ability to create compositions that simplify a subject to its essence, a selective use of rich color, a sensitivity for the beauty of light, skilled brushwork, skilled massing or drawing abilities, a feeling of solidity, volume and depth, and a feeling for the air in a painting."
The unique paintings created by Farrell are not only incredible for their Old Masters style, but also because Farrell has studied the canvas preparation techniques of the Old Masters and has mastered these techniques, which ensure that his work will last for centuries: The use of linen rather than canvas, preparation of his own supports and a less absorbent ground material for ease of moving the paint on the linen.
Farrell's remarkable work hangs in private collections nationally and can be found in gallery exhibits on the east coast and in Arizona.
