Phil Gidley

Art and the sea are second nature to Phil Gidley, who was born in 1952 in New Bedford, Massachusetts; a small New England coastal fishing town.  Fishing, boating and painting have been his favorite activities since childhood. He is largely self-taught, which accounts for his uniquely distinct style. Having lived near the sea all his life and having worked on sailing yachts and commercial fishing boats, he is thoroughly familiar with his subject matter. Each piece is carefully researched to produce accurate, vibrant and action-packed renderings of the sea and sea-going vessels, whether they are clipper ships or catboats.

His work has universal appeal and has been widely exhibited in galleries in Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, New York City, Newport and Cape Cod. Gidley is dedicated to his craft and his primary goal is the production of superior pieces of art for the knowledgeable, value-conscious collector.

Phil's first commercial success in painting was his boat portraits and waterfront scenes.  He joined the Copley Society of Boston, the nation's oldest painter's association, and quickly gained distinction. Adding to his success, Phil was a finalist in American Artist Magazine's National Art Competition. The City of New Bedford, Massachusetts, has also commissioned Phil to produce a series of public paintings.

Phil produces original oils of Newport and the surrounding areas.  His work is shown in many private and public estates throughout the United States as well as Internationally.
