Annora Spence
Born in 1963, Annora Spence studied printed textiles at Liverpool Polytechnic during the early 1980’s and continued her further education in MA in the same subject at Birmingham Polytechnic.
Having completed her studies Annora worked as a freelance artist and designer. Since 1990 Annora has concentrated on her career as a painter and has enjoyed successful and sell out shows in London and abroad. She has been making silkscreen prints and each new edition selling out in record time. Annora has recently started creating etchings and bronze sculpture.
Annora’s work is always guaranteed to be filled with humor and her own brand of quirkiness. She says of her own work " my aim is to explore the relationships between the often eccentric characters, placed in situations that are comic and sometimes near impossible."
"Many of the ideas for my paintings are derived from my extensive travels throughout Europe, India and Asia. During these journeys, I repeatedly came across situations, characters, or colors which I record in drawing or photographic form. I work in a variety of media, often combined together in painting."
"Humor has always been a significant ingredient in my work and I try to bring this out in the way I manipulate figurative images and characters, developing a story line around them as I go along. In the more recent paintings, interiors have become a prominent source of inspiration. Scale too is an important tool for me. By turning it on its head, the humor of the image can be enhanced."
