Suzanne McWhinnie is a contemporary realist painter who uses oil paints and transparent watercolor to create sharply focused images that are bold statements about everyday objects. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Skidmore College and has participated in both individual, as well as group shows all over the United States. McWhinnie begins a painting by first asking herself; "Is this a powerful image," and will not bother to paint anything that she believes will bore the viewer or herself. She states "By enlarging an image and creating a dynamic composition, my paintings have impact."
McWhinnie strives to create a painting that compels a strong response from the viewer, and achieves this through her use of bold color, design, and broad range of values. She reveals, "When I work in oils, the richness of the paint on the canvas or board is important to me. I like being able to change the thickness of the paint to create a tactile quality. I find that I can push the concept of the painting further by creating mysterious darks and lost edges." While working in transparent watercolor, gouache and acrylics are not used, but rather the whites and lights in the painting come from the light reflecting off of the white paper. To obtain the darks in the paintings, she applies many layers of transparent paint. Sable brushes are used as well as a variety of weights of watercolor paper.
